Child Sponsorship FAQ’s

Q. How do I pay?

You can pay using a Paypal, credit/debit card, personal check, or direct deposit. This money is sent to our home church in Arvada, Colorado. Then, they wire the money to us in Thailand. To sign up for sponsorship, please click here.

Q. How much is child sponsorship?

Our goal is for each child to have three sponsors at $40/month per sponsor. However, some sponsors choose to give more. Once a child reaches full sponsorship ($120/month), we will stop looking for sponsors for him or her.

Q. What does my donation cover?

Because our children impoverished or at-risk, their families cannot afford to care for them. Therefore, Akha Outreach pays for all living and educational expenses. Your gift covers food, utilities, school uniforms, transportation, personal and school supplies, special activities and medical care. In addition, we have a full-time Bible school on the compound, and most of our students are from needy Akha families as well. They live at the Foundation full-time and pay minimal tuition, so your gift also helps cover food and utilities for our Bible school students.

Q. How can I be involved in my child’s life?

We encourage you to regularly send photographs and descriptions of your family to your child so they get to know you a bit. Also, your child will send you a personal letter twice a year about his/her life. You can also send cards or emails. When we get a card/email from you, we will translate it for the child and give it to him/her to keep. Pictures of sponsors usually find a prominent place in the children’s personal lockers or photo albums.

Q. Can I send anything besides cards?

You are welcome to send small, flat items such as stickers, postcards, pens/pencils, jewelry, and small items of clothing such as a scarves or t-shirts.

Q. Is there anything I shouldn’t send?

Please do not send cash, playing cards, gum, or packages larger than a medium-sized manila envelope (sometimes our local post office charges us an expensive tax on larger packages).

Q. Can I send pocket money?

If you want to bless your child with a bit extra, you can do so by including it in your support check and writing a clear note indicating the extra gift amount. Again, please do not send cash through the mail. Your child will be notified of the amount you have sent.

Q. Will the children receive all of the pocket money?

Yes, all the extra gift money you send will go directly to your child.

Q. Can I send letters/emails?

Yes, we ask that you communicate often with your child to strengthen the bonds between you. A staff member will translate any correspondence for the child.

Q. Can the children reply to letters/emails?

Time does not permit us to translate replies to all the letters/emails; however, you will receive personal letters twice a year from your child which often contain answers to the questions in the letters you have sent.

Q. Can I visit my child?

Yes! We often have teams of sponsors come to visit their children here. Please click here for more information.

Q. What do the children need?

Our children come from varied backgrounds; some receive a bit of spending money from their relatives, others receive none at all. Oftentimes, a small monetary gift is much appreciated so they can purchase a much-desired pair of sports shoes or a new dress outfit.

Q. What about Christmas?

Looking to contribute to the Christmas fund? Please click here: Christmas Fund.
Because the local post office has begun taxing larger packages and the fact that our children are getting older, we have changed the way we do Christmas giving. Rather than sending a gift through the mail, we ask sponsors to consider contributing to our Christmas fund which is then divided and distributed evenly among all the children so they can go on a shopping spree. In addition, everyone on the compound receives a stocking on Christmas morning. However, sponsors are still welcome to send photos, cards and small, flat items for Christmas if desired.

Q. Is there a time limit for sponsoring?

Sponsorship can be a long-term financial commitment. However, once the child graduates from the highest level of education he/she wishes to pursue, sponsorship for that child is ended and we will then recommend another child for sponsorship. If, at any time, sponsors wish to terminate a current sponsorship, please kindly provide us with one month’s notice.

Q. What happens if sponsors forget to pay?

We will pre-pay for the child’s needs and send a reminder to the sponsor. We understand the financial troubles happen to everyone and we want to make it possible for everyone to continue sponsorship if they wish to. However, after several attempts to contact the sponsor with no reply, we will assume the sponsor has withdrawn from the sponsorship program and will search for another sponsor for that child.
